What Are Weight Loss Patches

With the continued increase in obesity figures and overweight related ailments, there has been an increase in the number of diet pills, weight loss patches, and teas flooding the market with several claims of effectiveness. While the other types of weight loss products may seem normal, there are still a lot of people who don't know much about what weight loss patches are all about.

A "weight loss patch" or "diet patch" can be said to be a new and innovative way of administering weight loss supplements transdermally i.e. through the skin. A diet patch is therefore simply a small self-adhesive bandage-like substance placed on a smooth part of the skin such as the tummy, arm, or thigh that helps to suppress appetite and increase metabolism.

The introduction of weight loss patches while helping to overcome the difficulty of having to take a weight loss supplement several times a day also helps to provide the body with a controlled-release of the active ingredients into the body. This easy mode of application of diet patches makes their effects available on a 24-hour basis.

Diet patches essentially function in two ways: (a) they help to suppress appetite thereby reducing the overall amount of food ingested which consequently results in a reduction in overall daily calorie intake; and (b) they increase the body's metabolism which also helps to burn more calories. This double-edged approach of diet patches therefore has the potential to drastically increase a dieter's fat burning ability.

Weight loss patches have been made possible due to the discovery of certain drugs that have the ability to penetrate the human skin through its capillary networks while still remaining effective at low doses. These drugs could therefore be applied transdermally (through the skin) instead of being taken orally or injected.

This has led to patches becoming a more preferred mode of medicine delivery as they also have a controlled-release capability which gives them an additionally advantage over conventional oral intakes and injections which deliver high concentration of doses into the bloodstream that soon later wears off necessitating a re-take. Furthermore, conventional medications are only able to deliver just about 5% of their active ingredients as most are destroyed in the stomach and liver before they reach the bloodstream.

Notwithstanding these facts about the effectiveness of medicinal patch technology, and the promises about the effectiveness of weight loss patches in particular, caution must however not be thrown to the wind.

Most diet patches on the market today are essentially a blend of five main active ingredients which include
(a) Guarana - a metabolism-boosting stimulant;
(b) Chromium - for reducing appetite and regulating blood sugar levels;
(c) 5-HTP - a neurotransmitter that elevates mood and also increase metabolism;
(d) Garcinia Cambogia - blocks absorption of carbohydrates; and
(e) hoodia - an appetite suppressant.

Despite the fact that most manufactures of diet patches claim that their patches are made from 100% natural ingredients, which is somehow supposed to make them harmless, not all of the available diet patches can be said to be truly "natural".

It is therefore quite unfortunate that many so-called diet patches have failed to live up to expectation while others are simply just scams cashing in on the rising popularity of weight loss patches. For instance, there are manufacturers that have been penalized by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for unsubstantiated claims about the weight loss effectiveness of their diet patches.

Equally unfortunate, is the fact that most dieters are also of the opinion that once applied, this supposed "miracle" patches will automatically solve their weight loss problems with them do little or nothing or else to support to their weight loss efforts.

Diet patches are nonetheless a very welcomed development in the slimming world as they have the potential to help dieters control their appetite thereby reducing their overall calorie intake while also increasing their body metabolism. Also they prove very useful for those who find it difficult taking tablets, detest the textures of shakes or those who generally have problems keeping with their medication schedules.

However, like other types of weight loss medication and diet systems, diet patches are meant to be used as supplements to a healthy lifestyle of eating a well-balanced diet and engaging in regular physical exercise.
